Who are Z Energy?

Z Energy is a household name in New Zealand, operating more than 170 Z stations across the country. Known for its strong community values, barista-made coffee, and legendary pies, Z is more than just a place to fill up - it's a full convenience destination.

The Challenge

Historically, Z Energy relied on third-party loyalty programs such as Flybuys, which were effective in offering fuel discounts but limited in several key areas:

  • No direct customer relationship or access to first-party data
  • Lack of control over loyalty mechanics and UX
  • Inability to drive cross-sell across food, beverages, or other services

Z Energy made the decision to take full ownership of its loyalty strategy, with the shutdown of Flybuys NZ reinforcing the opportunity.

The Solution: Z Rewards

In March 2025, just nine months after signing a contract with Eagle Eye, Z Energy launched Z Rewards at more than 170 Z sites across the country. Z Rewards is a Z-owned and operated loyalty program powered by Eagle Eye.

Delivered through the Z App, Z Rewards offers a simple solution to better recognize and reward loyal customers for more of their spending at Z, beyond fuel:*

  • 6c off per litre (up to 100L) every day
  • 1 point per $1 spent on fuel
  • 2 points per $1 spent on most in-store items and EV charging
  • Exchange 500 points for treats (including coffee, pies, energy drinks, sausage rolls)
  • Referral bonuses and launch promotions
  • Get 500 bonus points every time you've purchased 5 barista made drinks.​
  • And personalized offers driven by customer behaviour.

The platform is integrated with Z's existing digital stack, including Salesforce, Invenco, and Rush Digital, ensuring full orchestration of offers and data flow across every customer touchpoint.

The seamless integrations created a unified customer experience: one app for loyalty tracking, reward redemption, referrals, promotions, fuel payments, and coffee pre-orders.

Importantly, Eagle Eye's platform allowed Z to configure without customizing, giving marketers the ability to build, update, and deploy offers without needing developer support.

Results and Impact

Within three months of launch (March 10 through June 30), the results have been impressive:

  • In-store item scan rates jumped to 26.6%, up from 12.5% in February
  • Over 360,000 customers on the Z App - 31% new since launch
  • Fuel volumes remained steady despite phasing out major legacy programs
  • NPS of the app experience rose immediately post-launch - a rare feat for any new tech rollout
  • Barista-made drinks ranked as the most redeemed item

Z's marketing team can now move faster, test more offers, and directly manage customer engagement - transforming what was once a rigid system into a flexible engine for growth and connection.
